Permanent Resident’s Card Renewal

You need a valid PR card to return to Canada as a Permanent Resident.

Permanent residents must have a valid permanent resident card (PR card) or  permanent resident travel document (PRTD) to return to Canada by plane, train, bus or boat. Without one, you may not be able to board.

Your PR card needs to be valid when you show it. If your card expires, you will have to apply for a new one. You are still a permanent resident if your card expires. The permanent resident card is proof of your PR status in Canada and is required for travel in or outside of the country. If you are replacing a lost, stolen, or damaged permanent resident card (PR card), you will be required to complete and submit an application package. This application package also applies to those that did not receive a PR card within 180 days of migrating, for those renewing an expired PR card, and for those who legally change their name and need to update their PR card.

Calculating your physical presence in Canada, and applying with the proper documents is important when applying to renew your PR card.

What should you do if you don’t have a valid PR card or your card is about to expire:

If you’re outside Canada, Contact us to apply for a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) for you to return to Canada.

If you want to leave Canada: Contact us before you make your travel plans so you can renew your PR card before you leave, in case you don’t get your card in time, we can apply for a PRTD from outside Canada for your return to Canada.
